1 John Graeme Livingstone: "HOUSE FULL OF STRANGERS"
Steinar ALBRIGTSEN/Tom PACHECO: “NOBODIES"
Track Listings:
"This is the kind of album that doesn't get old. This is one to come back to again and again." - Gary Alexander
* Lovers of the work of Tom Pacheco will find this a highly satisfying recording. Teaming the intense US singer/songwriter with Norwegian musician Steinar Albrigtsen is a match made in heaven. The mixture of Tom's dynamic vocal style and Steinar's melodic voice works perfectly.
* Songs of introspection (They Can't Touch You Now), mix with bluesy tunes (Night Train Blues) and there's even a hint of controversy in the lyrics to "Teddy Roosevelt". Excellent musicianship throughout + fine production from Tom, Steinar & Scott Petito.
Star Rating - ****
Top Track(s): "One Heart, One Soul" & "Teddy Roosevelt"

Jim ALMAND: "POWER OF THE SPOKEN WORD"
Track Listings:
"This is a group of tunes that I've wanted to release for a while. I went into the studio, with the hopes of capturing a live feel and keeping as many first takes as was audibly bearable. I've always sought that sense of energetic freedom that only comes from the moment." - Jim Almand, from the sleeve notes
* If you like Tom Pacheco, then chances are, you'll love Jim Almand. "Lilly & The Bone" in particular, reminds me both lyrically and in it's delivery style of Mr P. Like Tom's "Bare Bones" project, this is a "warts 'n' all" recording. There is the odd fluff and occasional "bum note", but this rather adds to the appeal of this fine album. Jim's arrangements are sparse, using a minimal amount of backing instrumentation. The song quality is excellent throughout and I found my foot was tapping along to many of the tracks. I can't think of any better recommendation than that!

Vince BELL: "TEXAS PLATES"
Track listings:
Masterfully produced by Robin Eaton, this fine recording contains much for the "Roots Music" fan to enjoy - top quality songs backed by a high standard of musicianship. Recorded in Nashville, with the likes of the legendary Al Perkins in attendance, "Texas Plates" is Vince's best album to date.
"Out of the dreadful reign of night rides a loner...From out of nowhere, from out of sight like thunder...Out of the shadows into the light." - From "Have Not, Will Travel"

Kate BUSH: "HOUNDS OF LOVE"
Track Listings:
The Ninth Wave
Bonus Tracks (Not on original release):
"I am falling like a stone, like a storm being born again, into the sweet morning fog. D'you know what? I love you better now." - From "The Morning Fog"
* Critically hailed as a masterpiece on it's release in 1985, Kate Bush's "Hounds Of Love" has stood the test of time. "Running Up That Hill", "The Big Sky" & "Cloudbusting" all sound as fresh and powerful today as they did all those years ago. The conceptual "Ninth Wave" too has lost none of it's magic. Kate has always stood way to the left of popular music, carving her own unique path - the result being a series of thoughtful and challenging albums.

Kate CAMPBELL: "MONUMENTS"
Track Listings:
"She sees the world through yellowing lace, the world hasn't seen her since seventy-eight. Except for the nephew who used to look in to bring her, her chocolate and tonic and gin" - From "Petrified House"
* With this latest album, Kate has taken her music away from the Gospel sound of her previous effort - "Wanderin' Strange", and into more Bluesier, Rockier territory. "Corn In A Box" is a great Rock song and "New South" drips with that good old Southern States Blues. There's still Gospel music in evidence - "The Way Home", has Kate's lone voice accompanied by a simple, yet effective backing of just piano and strings. The message is clear as she sings "You don't have to walk that road alone, Jesus is the way home..."
* Walt Aldridge's production is excellent, as is his guitar playing - subtle but effective. Listen to "Corn In A Box" - you'll see what I mean.
* "Monuments" has a striking cover, a black and white picture of "Tombstones for Sale" - a photo of "William Edmondson's Sculpture Yard" taken in 1941. Various photos of Mr Edmondson's work can also be found dotted around the CD inlay notes.
* "Monuments" is as good as "Wanderin' Strange", but I wouldn't describe it as a better album - just more immediate and accessible. Fans of Kate's music will not be disappointed this is a fine addition to her catalogue and I'm sure she'll be featuring songs from "Monuments" on her up and coming solo UK tour.

Kate CAMPBELL: "TWANG ON A WIRE"
Track Listings:
"Twang On A Wire" is the embodiment of the belief that a great song well-sung will somehow connect with unseen strangers, and by doing so, we all become less strange to one another. It is also a loving thank-you note to the women whose own hard work inspired others to achieve their goals. But most of all, it's about great songs. Feel free to sing along..." Jim Musser, October 2002 - From the sleeve notes
* The above quote from Jim Musser really sums up this CD - a collection of Kate's favourite songs, originally sung by artistes as diverse as Dolly Parton and Jeanne Pruett. This is an excellent "good time, sing-a-long" album and is perhaps best summed up in Kate's own words...
"I made this record because these were the songs I was listening to when I first began to play the guitar. These were the records that I owned - that I played in my room. You could sing along with them; they were meant to be sung along with. Everybody knows them and knows all the words."
* Kate is in fine voice throughout, and her backing band are all superb - particularly on Dolly Parton's "Touch Your Woman".
* All the tracks were inspired by songs released during the period 1968 - 1975. Kate's own homage to the "First Ladies Of Country", the self-penned "Twang On A Wire" is a fitting coda to this superlative recording.

Kate CAMPBELL: "WANDERIN' STRANGE"
Track Listings:
"The most energizing, heartfelt and soulful batch of gospel this side of Aretha" - Iowa City Press-Citizen
A collection of both contemporary and traditional gospel songs, this is a superb album. The daughter of a Preacher, Kate Campbell brings the hymns & songs she heard as a child totally up to date with the aid of her backing band and a rich powerful voice. A first class recording that pushes back the boundaries of gospel music.

Bob CHEEVERS: "GETTYSBURG TO GRACELAND"
Track Listings:
"You wanna know about the South? Just listen to my friend Cheevers" - Kevin Welch
* Lyrically, Bob takes in a wide range of topics from the social comment of "Shoulda Picked Our Own Cotton" to humour on "Large Marge". There are stories and characters from the "Deep South" too, all brought to life by Bob's rich melodic voice. Another excellent "Roots Music" album, or as Bob himself calls it: - "Pre-Retro Delta-Folk Acoustic Story Songs!"

Bob CHEEVERS: "WE ARE ALL NAKED"
Track Listings:
"We are all naked beneath our clothes. To stand naked is to be seen with all our strengths and weaknesses. And that's the truth!" - Bob Cheevers
* Don't expect to hear another "Gettysburg" album - Bob's already been there! This time around, the songs are much more personal and introspective. In fact, this is the "Roots Music" version of Peter Gabriel's excellent "Us" album. Exploring the ups and downs of a relationship, Bob's lyrics are not full of self-pity, instead they are a collection of fond memories...

Guy CLARK: "THE DARK"
Track Listings:
"Down by the creek where the water goes slow, the green-backed heron and the moccasin know, all things come to him who waits yet he is lost who hesitates - life and death dancin' round in the mud..." - From "Mud"
* There's a nice laidback feel to this latest offering by Guy Clark. You know the drill, get a few mates round pick up a couple of guitars and just sing and play some songs. "The Dark" also has a homegrown DIY quality which further adds to it's charm. Production qualities are high and the mix is perfect for this style of music.
* Ably performed by Mr Clark himself on Acoustic Guitar/Vocals and Messrs Thompson & Scott on assorted instruments + Shawn Camp, Tim O'Brien, Chris Latham, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings - "The Dark" has some fine songs penned by Guy and various collaborators. All the songs are short and to the point - the longest track clocks in at just under 4 and a half minutes! Undoubted highlight is the excellent "Soldier's Joy" - well played, well sung and a fine "historically themed" composition.
* This is a good "Roots" album from Guy Clark and friends, proving that old adage, that there's "life in the old dog yet!"

Bob COLLUM: "LOW RENT ROMEO"
Track Listings:
"It's a little strange, though not at all unwarranted, how many Amercian singer/songwriters there are who take their lead from Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe." - Gerry Ranson
* An expatriate American, Bob comes from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and now resides in Essex, England.
* Bob's music is a nice cross between "Roots", "Rock" and "Pop" styles. The songs have an endearing sing-a-long quality, particularly "Falling Blue", who's chorus I still can't get out of my head!
* The arrangements are mainly acoustic with a bass & drums backing. There's some excellent "Neil Young-esque" electric guitar playing ("Half Of What You See")and even a cover of Young's "For The Turnstiles" too. Also impressive, are the solo acoustic numbers, such as Woody Guthrie's "Dear Mrs Roosevelt" and Bob's own "Laws Of Gravity".
* This is a fine album, with lot's to recommend it to the discerning listener. Bob's songs are "catchy" and the standard of musicianship is high. You can see Bob, touring up and down the country (UK) over the coming months. A list of concerts appears on our "Tour News" page.

Rick DANKO: "TIMES LIKE THESE"
Track Listings:
"Rick had always said he would never put his name on an album unless he was proud of it. The reason being, he had to live with it." - Elizabeth Danko
* A beautifully understated album, containing some fine songs and a wealth of musical talent to back them up. There are laid back versions of Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang" + a jazzy interpretation of "This Wheel's On Fire" - nothing like the "Absolutely Fabulous" version! Excellent musical contributions throughout - from the likes of Garth Hudson, Joe Walsh and Aaaron Hurwitz make this a fine swansong for the late "Band" bassist.

Jeff FINLIN: "LIVE FROM NOWHERE"
Track Listings:
"I've seen the faces of the linemen, the little black boxes of the shinemen. Your train's delayed again, it seems, broken down in Alchemy" - From "Alchemy"
* Jeff's voice (a sort of higher pitched Dylan) takes a bit of getting used to - that said, this is a cracker of an album! Jeff & his band really rock-out on the opening tracks "West Of Rome" and "Goodbye Is Just A Freight Train Comin'" - which sounds remarkably like The Stones circa "It's Only Rock & Roll (But I Like It).
* Special mention must go to Jeff's backing band and in particular Pat Buchanan's guitar playing which is excellent throughout.
* Jeff already has a fine reputation as a Roots singer/songwriter, this live album will certainly enhance and add to that.

Nanci GRIFFITH: "WINTER MARQUEE"
Track Listings:
"This cradle on the interstate, makes me weary of dreams... The hurt that they cause, is now restless it seems... Oh soldier, dear soldier, you keep your dreams to yourself... My heart's rolled and tumbled, until I've put it on the shelf..." - From "I'm Not Drivin' These Wheels"
* This is an excellent recording that fully captures the magic of Nanci Griffith & The Blue Moon Orchestra live in concert. As well as performing her own material, Nanci covers songs by Bob Dylan, John Prine, Julie Gold, Phil Ochs & Townes Van Zandt. The musicianship is of a very high standard, and with guest performers Tom Russell, Andrew Hardin & Emmylou Harris - a splendid time is guaranteed for all!
* Nanci's backing band deserves a special mention - in particular, Chas Williams excellent guitar work and Pat McInerney's enthusiastic drumming! Ron De Le Vega's bass playing is solid and James Hooker's keyboards to-gether with Le Ann Etheridge's vocals and guitar work add colour and depth to Nanci's songs and performance.
* "Two For The Road", "Listen To The Radio" & "I'm Not Drivin' These Wheels" are all great singalong toe-tapping numbers - but there's also room for more introspective material like Dylan's "Boots Of Spanish Leather" and Nanci's "There's A Light Beyond These Woods".
* "Winter Marquee" is available in both CD & DVD format. The DVD version contains four extra tracks - see the "Track Listings" above for details.

"The past is never past ~ it's with us all the time in the soil beneath our feet and the memories deep inside" - From "The Past Is Never Past"
* If you're new to the music of Doug Hoekstra, then this fine album is the place to start. Full of atmosphere and with stunning lyrics, Doug's almost conversational vocal delivery style draws the listener into the songs. Immaculately performed and ably abetted by ex-Bruce Hornsby & The Range guitarist George Marinelli and Keyboard player Jeff Kowalkowski this is probably Doug's finest album to date.

Sean O’RIADA/NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF IRELAND: "MISE EIRE" (OST)
Track Listings:
“MISE EIRE proves that Ireland has a composer of film music as good as anyone in the world. In this film, Sean O’Riada seems to have Mozart’s knack of exactly the right notes in exactly the right places ~ no mre, no less ~ and Gustav Mahler’s ability to use strange rich colours with a sparse austerity…” Charles Acton

Tom PACHECO: "BARE BONES & BARBED WIRE"
Track Listings:
Disc 2:
"I'd go as far as saying that he's the best (largely) unheard of singer/songwriter presently plying his trade. The proof is within." - Steve Morris
* One of the benchmarks that separates mediocre singer/songwriters from the truly gifted ones is the ability to produce a great performance using just the voice and an acoustic guitar - Tom Pacheco manages that feat here with ease. Although recorded in a studio, this is in reality a live album. Tom's songs are stripped down to the bare essentials - and the results are of a quality rarely heard before. A remarkable recording that brims over with energy and intensity.
Star Rating - *****
Top Track(s): "Jessica Brown" & "Made In America"

Tom PACHECO: "BLUEFIELDS"
Track Listings:
"You just keep on hoping, all through life's expense. 'Til you end up knowing, none of it makes sense..." - From "Bluefields"
* The success of this re-issued 1995 CD is, in no small part, due to the production by Steinar Albrigtsen & Sverre Erik Henriksen. With no reverb effects evident diluting Tom's vocals they are "up close and personal" - just as they should be. The musical arrangements are perfect - sparse and "dirty". This recording is certainly one of the best of Tom's "Backing Band" albums…
Star Rating - *****
Top Track(s): "Welcome To The End Of The Century" & "Red White And Bleeding"
Tom PACHECO: "LUCK OF ANGELS"
Track Listings:
"The waitress must have known something, she said 'This dinner is on me, and may the luck of angels be with you.'" - From "Oklahoma Plains".
* This album finds Mr Pacheco in "With Backing Band" mode. As ever, the songs are superb - the musicians featured are too. But, just listen to "The Best Kept Secret In Youngstown Ohio" and "Robert & Ramona" both here and on the "Bare Bones & Barbed Wire" CD - I know which versions I prefer.
Star Rating - ***
