"See the burning in my glare, like the waves dance in your hair
He couldn't do that for you ~ nor would he dare
No, he does not deserve you..." From "He Does Not Deserve You"
- After a couple of listens to this album, I really began to get into the musical world of Andy Thornton. Andy has a plaintive voice with a slight vibrato that adds depth to his singing. This is an excellent CD which features a collection of memorable songs and solid workmanlike performances from the musicians involved. The tracks are generally of a laid back, acoustic driven nature ~ which suits the material...
- The album opens with the sound of an orchestra tuning up and then launchs into my favourite track "Shake The Moon Down" with it's catchy sing-along chorus ~ "Shake the world down, shake the moon down, shake the stars from the sky til I'm dust. But tell me please ~ have you never been in love? Baby please ~ have you never been in love?"
- Next up is "He Does Not Deserve You" which has a slight Jazzy tinge to it ~ particularly in the break between the chorus and verses. Once again, Andy conjurs up another great chorus here ~ something he appears to do quite effortlessly! Track 3 "Love's Promised Land" is more up tempo and is driven along by Andy's insistent acoustic guitar playing...
- "Crashing & Burning" is sparsely arranged with just Andy's vocal, bass and a finger-picked acoustic guitar. More great lyrics are in evidence here ~ "Close your eyes, count to 10, it's time for the hiding again, cos she's at home saying how kind you can be and you're alone crashing and burning..."
- "Rosey" features the addition of viola and cello behind Andy's earnest strummed acoustic guitar playing and emotional vocal performance. Tracks 6 & 7 have the solid drumming of Eddie John behind them ~ "Under My Skin" again has a Jazzy touch to it while "That Girl" is more "Rootsy"...
- Lyrically, the next track, "Shores Of Forever" is probably my favourite ~ "Oh my love what's this journey we travel? When every step sees our wishes unravel, sees the stone turned to gravel under our feet." This song is powered along by a repeated acoustic guitar riff and Andy's best vocal performance + there are some very effective choir style backing vocals that add depth to the piece...
- "Sunflower Girl" is another great song lyrically, "Here where the folds of the light take flame, Vincent is starring the night again 'til his eye catches your sigh. In the tremor of death, these two worlds collide." Yet again, the backing is just Andy and an acoustic guitar and is all the better for it, allowing the lyrics and melody lines to shine through...
- The album concludes with the aptly titled "Safely Home". This track is given the full treatment with drums, bass and strings pushing the song along. Ending with just Andy, his acoustic guitar and the words "Cos now you're here beside me, now you're here beside me, I am safely home" ~ absolutely beautiful, I confess my lower lip trembled!
- Great stuff this from one of the UK's finest singer/songwriters. I loved the melody lines, the insightful lyrics, the sparse backings and the occasional Jazzy touches ~ all of which combined to make a superb album that the discerning listener will want to hear again and again...

"And finally, the gratitude of my heart and the eternal thanks to The Great Mystery for allowing me to hang around having adventures for far longer than I counted on..." Steve Power, from the sleeve notes
- This excellent recording is a rich slice of Alt Country/Americana. Steve has a powerful melodic vocal style ~ he's also a top-flight songwriter. I liked this album immediately as I found all the songs, arrangements and performances very accessible...
- "The Journey" opens with the pulsating "Money & Fun" a song that's powered along by Colin Griffin's thundering drums plus there's a blistering guitar break courtesy of Pete Matheson...
- Next up is the Motown-esque (think the late 60s early 70s golden Motown period) "They Don't Know About You" which is in style and feel a complete contrast to "Money & Fun" ~ Steve sings this track in a wonderfully relaxed style…
- Track 3, “Charlene” features more great guitar work from Pete Matheson and is a Bluesy piece. Steve delivers this song in an almost whispered conversational way ~ which suits the song’s story narrative as it draws the listener in to it’s tale of a loose woman…
- “Shadow Of A Doubt” is driven by Colin Edwards’ accomplished piano playing ~ this recording (for some reason) reminded me of Roy Orbison! “A Normal Man” is another Blues based track and features another spot-on laid back vocal performance from Steve…
- “Til We Kiss” is the first of two great duets between Steve and the excellent Taffy Stephens. There’s a great chorus to this track “So how long is it going to be, and who will start you or me, do we both resist? How long, how long ‘til we kiss?” ~ this song is sung with great passion by Steve & Taffy…
- “Running For The Border” has a hint of Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant in Steve’s powerful wailing harmonica playing. This track fairly motors along and is no doubt a real crowd pleaser when played live…
- “Death Comes Creepin’” is underpinned by an almost hypnotic repeated acoustic guitar figure and features some really eerie lyrics ~ “What you gonna do when death come creepin’ what you gonna do when he creep in your room? Gonna stare in his eye gonna laugh him out of that room…”
- “Life Went And Happened” has a minimalist musical arrangement and is all the better for it. As an example each line is punctuated by Pete Matheson’s sublime yet sparse slide guitar work ~ a technique which beautifully underpins Steve’s vocal performance…
- “Boss’s Daughter” is a slightly risqué acoustic driven song that contains some of Steve’s best lyrics “Boss’s daughter sure look good to me but she’s kinda confusing it’s like this you see, said she’d be here at seven it’s a quarter past nine, my bet’s she’s travellin’ in another space and time…”
- “You’re Too Late, I’m Gone” is a full scale Blues workout while “The Journey” features the return of Taffy Stephens and has a Gospel tinge to it. There’s even a hint of that old traditional melody “Shenandoah” in some of Ian Lawrence’s dobro guitar work…
- Final track is a Countrified re-working of the classic “The House Of The Rising Sun” ~ I have to say that this is the best version of this song that I’ve ever heard + there’s superb guitar playing from Graham Williams and Ian Lawrence that really adds to the power of the arrangement…
- In conclusion, I’m really impressed with this album. Not only, as I mentioned at the beginning of this review, is Steve an excellent songwriter (I particularly liked the tongue-in-cheek style of some of the lyrics) but he can also turn his hand vocally to any type of music from Rock to Blues to Gospel to Ballads ~ and he manages the transition between these different genres with the greatest of ease too! As an example of Americana/Alt-Country/Roots music, this CD is highly recommended…

7. Then I Close My Eyes (Gilmour)
8. Smile (Gilmour/Samson)
9. A Pocketful Of Stones (Gilmour/Samson)
10. Where We Start (Gilmour)
"Let the night surround you we're halfway to the stars.
Ebb and flow let it go feel her warmth beside you..." From "On An Island"
- This is the third solo album from the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist and arguably his best so far. Amazingly, neither of David's previous efforts sounded Floydian and neither does this one! Fans do however get to listen to David's peerless guitar playing and distinctive vocals. All the tracks are either solo compositions or written in partnership with David's wife, authoress Polly Samson...
- The album opens with the slightly avant garde instrumental "Castellorizon" which features various pieces fading in and out before the famous Gilmour guitar comes screaming in with a typically melodic solo full of agonising sustained notes...
- "On An Island" is next and is one of my favourite pieces on the album. David Crosby & Graham Nash guest on harmonies and the result is pure magic as the three vocalists combine seamlessly to produce a dazzling display ~ my only quibble is that this is the only track David & Graham appear on. Beneath the exemplary vocals, David & his musicians conjur up a powerful backing track that's slightly reminiscent of "Comfortably Numb" in it's closing stages...
- Next is the colourful ballad "The Blue" which features a repeated piano figure that drifts along underneath the verses ~ nice relaxing lyrics from Polly here, "Still, marooned silence drifting through, nowhere to choose just blue". Best track comes next with the powerful "Take A Breath" with it's slightly twisted chord sequence. "Take a breath, take a deep breath now" chants David as the song builds to a full scale band workout ~ great solo at the end(s) of the piece...
- Track 5, the string laden instrumental "Red Sky At Night" is unusual in that it features the first recorded saxophone parts played by David ~ and very good they are too!
- "This Heaven" which has the legendary Georgie Fame on Hammond organ is a Jazz/Blues piece with a great chorus ~ "So break the bread and pour the wine, I need no blessings but I'm counting mine. Life is much more than money buys, when I see the faith in my children's eyes..."
- "Then I Close My Eyes" is an instrumental which includes in it's illustrious cast B J Cole, Phil Manzanera & Robert Wyatt. The track builds through a repeated guitar figure with more and more instruments appearing as the music progresses ~ sublime...
- The next track is the acoustic "Smile" in which David's vocals sound uncannily like Sir Paul McCartney! Polly's lyrics are simple and direct but also very effective ~ "I'll make my getaway, time on my own. Search for a better way to find my way home to your smile..."
- Penultimate track is the moody and atmospheric "A Pocketful Of Stones". This is probably the least Floyd-like song on the entire album and proves that there's more strings to David's bow than some might've thought. There are some very effective guitar parts but the piece as a whole is driven along by piano and orchestra...
- Finally we come to "Where We Start" which is (despite the title!) a fitting end to the album. Like "Smile", this track has a hint of The Beatles/Sir Paul McCartney about it, particularly in the melody line and in David's vocal delivery. Nice lyrics too from the man himself ~ "Where we start is where we end. We step out sweetly, nothing planned. Along by the river we feed bread to the swans and then over the footbridge to the woods beyond..."
- As a long time fan of Pink Floyd and David Gilmour (he's for many years been my favourite guitarist) I'm pleased to report that the man is still making great music and that "On An Island" is definitely (as I pointed out at the beginning of this review) his best solo work to date. David's wife Polly's lyrics should also be singled out for praise in particular those for "Take A Breath" & "Smile". The album is nicely packaged and the cover looks more like a book than a CD! Apparently, the album is being re-released with an additional DVD of David and his band performing live...

"...dazzling...I felt a shiver of excitement..." The Daily Telegraph
- Great to see Jeff Wayne's magnificent 1978 double album played live ~ and what a spectacle it is, with a great light show/special effects and knockout performances from the band/orchestra and guest singers. Of the original cast, Herbie Flowers & Chris Spedding return on bass and guitars respectively and also back in the ranks are Justin Hayward & Chris Thompson on lead vocals + composer Jeff Wayne himself conducting proceedings. There's even the "return" of the late Richard Burton as the narrator in the form of a holographic projection...
- My personal favourite has always been side one of the album which takes us from "The Eve Of The War" to "Horsell Common & The Heat Ray". Slightly different here is the addition of a back projected animated sequence which introduces the Martians and explains why they want to conquer and indeed need to colonise Earth...
- I actually think that the live version of Jeff's musical rendering of HG Well's epic tale is better than the original LP version because, being live, there's much more enthusiasm in the perfomances. Band members Herbie Flowers & Chris Spedding are particularly impressive as are Justin Hayward & Chris Thompson's vocal contributions...
- Replacing David Essex as The Artilleryman is the passionate Alexis James who gives a full, robust interpretation of the role as does Russell Watson who is excellent as The Preacher ~ a part orginally performed by the late Phil Lynott...
- Visually the production is immaculately staged with the electric band and orchestra on-stage in full view of the audience. The animated back-drop screen and mechanical Martian Tripod are also effective adding a great deal of drama to the show. The vocalists are dressed in Victorian clothes which adds a nice touch of period etail and authenticity...
- If you're a fan of the original LP (or even if you've never heard it before) I can highly recommend this musical adaptation of HG Well's famous book from which Jeff Wayne has composed a piece of work that stands up in it's own right. There are plenty of memorable tunes ~ particularly in the "Horsell Common & The Heat Ray" section which features some blistering guitar work from Chris Spedding and one of Rock music's most memorable bass lines performed by Herbie Flowers. If you missed the show or even if you were there, this DVD is well worth buying as a memento of the event...
- The show will be touring during late 2007 ~ confirmed dates are featured in the "Tour News" section...
- Finally, a quick word about the extras featured on the disk. There's a fascinating interview with Jeff Wayne + an equally interesting section on how they brought Richard Burton "back to life" as a holographic projection...

"I've been here twelve years," she said, and looked away
I didn't mean to be, but it turned out that way.
I came just for a while, but then there were the kids
I had to stay on when my marriage hit the skids..." From "Circuit City"
- On listening to this album for the first time, I was immediately struck by the quality of the songs and the drop-dead gorgeous vocals and harmonies. In style "Revenants" fits into the "Folk Rock" category (acoustic instruments with an electric bass/drum/percussion rhythm section) but doesn't owe anything to any other artiste that belongs to that genre ~ although there is a hint of the great Suzanne Vega in some of the melody lines and vocals (example: track 9 "Katie") + a there's hint of Neil Young's "Cowgirl In The Sand" in the intro (and breaks between the verses) to "Circuit City"...
- The album's arrangements and production (by the band themselves) are both superb and fit the style of the songs perfectly. Also worthy of a mention is Mark Saunders accomplished guitar/mandolin work which is not only technically flawless but warm and passionate as well ~ a great combination...
- Stand out tracks? I was particularly impressed with "Green", the stunning "Black Crow" & "Circuit City" + "Katie" & Mark's instrumental track "Hummingbird". Both the girls have great voices that blend together (along with Mark) to produce some stunning harmonies ~ listen to "A Place This Quiet" or to the chorus on "Make It Better"...
- The songs on the album are of a very high standard, not least lyrically. Here are a few examples: -
Green: "He's got pages filled with songs, each song there can right a wrong, except the wrong that's in my heart. Envy's tearing me apart..."
Black Crow: "Black crow against a yellow sky, black crow down he fly. Regard me with your onyx eye..."
Katie: My name is Katie and I have your key, I let myself into your big house early once a week, turn off the alarm and take my gear inside and see how you destroy your home in such a short time..."
- "Revenants" is one of the best albums I've heard for some time and one that will be in my CD player for a while yet! All the songs burn their way into your brain and I can imagine myself singing along to tracks like "Black Crow" & "Katie" in particular...
- I'm particularly sorry that until the band contacted me to review this album I'd never heard of "Mad Agnes"! Looking at the back of the CD's insert I see that also available are "Who's Mad Agnes?" (DVD), "Magic Hour" & "Live At UH" (CDs) and on the evidence of what I've heard here I can highly recommend listeners check out all these titles by this extraordinary band...
- I'll be putting the band's concert dates up on our "Tour News" page + watch out for an interview with Mad Agnes coming soon...
